10. Paradise Lost – Medusa (1 September)
Born and bred Yorkshire pioneers Paradise Lost are set to return this year with their first album since 2015’s The Plague Within. Veering effortlessly between gothic, doom, death, and sludge metal, Paradise Lost’s fifteenth studio album Medusa promises to be one worth checking out.
Largely considered as the originators of gothic metal, Paradise Lost have already made a profound impact on heavy metal, but they don’t seem to be done just yet. With two songs released from Medusa to date, they both point to a rejuvenated and reinvigorated band who aren’t prepared to rest on their laurels. The tracks emanate with the group’s trademark sound, merging gothic and doom metal with ease.
These musical innovators are almost three decades deep into their career, but yet, songs like “Blood and Chaos” and “The Longest Winter” feature the same intensity and appetite of a band just starting out. If the rest of Medusa follows suit, we could be looking at one of 2017’s best metal albums.
