10 Most Bizarre Music Videos Of The 21st Century

9. Telephone - Lady Gaga

This collaboration of pop royalty between Lady Gaga and Beyoncé is over 9 minutes long, packing in so much colour and absurdity. It opens with Lady Gaga being sent to prison after murdering a previous lover, a continuation of the narrative established in Paparazzi. From then on the video becomes darkly hilarious and surprisingly profound at times.

Gaga is stripped down to her underwear and is robbed of her individuality and persona by the prison guards. Her sexuality remains in tact but is behind bars, perhaps a commentary on the way sexuality has been used as just a mere commodity by the music industry.

We are then treated to Gaga and Beyoncé hopping in a truck titled the "P***y Wagon", a reference to Quentin Tarantino's Kill Bill. The duo then proceed to shatter the notion of female objectification. They feed each other food, which in a normal video would be highly sexualised by a nameless vixen. Instead it is done in such an over the top and absurd manner that the sexual nature of it is removed. And that's the point. Objectification isn't and should not be considered desirable.

Telephone appears at first sight a random assortment of edgy aesthetics, but in reality it is a timely and extremely creative short film.
