With the new year now firmly underway, it's a good time to look ahead at the incoming wave of albums and singles we can expect in 2020, as well as events like Leeds, Glastonbury, Download and Creamfields, with the summer festival circuit only a few short months away from kicking into gear.

But since we're still so close to 2019, now is also the perfect time to look back at the year that was, while celebrating the lives of those musicians who, sadly, will not be able to share in all that impending excitement with the rest of us.

It's a difficult thing to do, but it's always important to give a shout out to those influential figures who shaped the music industry, those rising stars who were taken before their time, and those less-famous names who nonetheless contributed heavily to the music we've all been enjoying for the last several decades.

May their songs provide people with many more happy memories in the future, but for now, let's have a chat about some talented artists who left us behind in 2019.

10. Tony Mills

Birmingham-born Tony Mills had a long and prosperous career as a rock singer, fronting bands like TNT, Serpentine and Shy, and supporting some massive names like Meat Loaf, Bon Jovi, Ozzy Osbourne and Twisted Sister.

He also did a lot of work as a backing vocalist and song writer, a truly versatile and talented musician who was always looking for the next big challenge.

In 2010, Mills suffered from a heart attack, from which he made a full recovery. Sadly though, that wouldn't be his last notable brush with a serious health condition: he was diagnosed with terminal cancer in April 2019 and passed away a few months later on 18 September, aged just 57.
