10 Noughties Pop Songs You'd Forgotten You Loved

9. Avril Lavigne - "Sk8r Boi"

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TIy3n2b7V9k As if the Romeo and Juliet cliché wasn't already overdone. But apparently Grease, West Side Story and Baz Luhrmann's adaptation just scratched the surface of reusing the original love story. Regardless of how sick to death we were with the whole motif - which was being trotted out endlessly at the same time by teen rom-coms, this actually was something new. Avril Lavigne used a text-speak title, the classically juxtaposed love, and yet more rocky riffs to re-market the concept in a way we had never seen before. The Canadian sweetheart describes how the Sk8r Boi's unrequited love came back to haunt his crush when he became a famous rockstar. Despite the somewhat tenuous plot line, it remains, for me a memorable Saturday afternoon pretending I was lucky enough to be Avril's girlfriend, and a rockstar.
