There's a long, strange history of censorship in popular music. And for the most part, that's all well and good. After all, people have to be pointlessly angry at something. Why not have that something be a Van Morrison song about making love in the green grass? (And without all these delightfully insane public outcries, what would even be the point of people making music?) Still, a great deal of these controversies are manufactured out of confusion and/or ignorance. Too often, all of the fuss about "indecent" music turns out, with the benefit of hindsight, to be downright silly. That's not to say there isn't a reason to be weary about letting any ol' thing on the radio. (Khia's "My Neck, My Back" isn't exactly suitable for children...or a good chunk of adults, for that matter). However, some instances of music censorship have come entirely out of nowhere and, even at the time of the initial "sanitization," were patently ridiculous and arbitrary decision. Let's all relish now in censors who took the fight to musicians and songs that are about as offensive as a slice of warm peach cobbler. (That...that wasn't a euphemism. Please don't edit that part out.)
