10 Things You Didn't Know About Nirvana's Nevermind

5. Dave Grohl Wasn't The Only Drummer On The Album

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tRnZmravj4w It€™s common knowledge that Dave Grohl was the sixth drummer of Nirvana and Nevermind was his first studio release with the band. However, he wasn€™t the only drummer to feature on the record. Pre-Dave Grohl, Nirvana with then sticksman Chad Channing hired for a week at a crummy recording studio in Seattle. It was here with producer Butch Vig that they set about demoing songs (known as the Smart Sessions) that would eventually feature on Nevermind. Songs recorded in these sessions featured Lithium, In Bloom, Breed (then called Immodium), Stay Away (then known as Pay To Play) and Polly. It was the latter song that seemingly went untouched when the band arrived at Sound City Studios in California, now armed with Grohl, to record Nevermind. Polly basically has no drum track. However, the chorus is accented by crashing cymbals and it€™s these demo cymbal hits that play out on the finished track giving former drummer Channing his only moment on the album. The reason behind their inclusion is fairly simple: Vig thought they were perfectly timed and sort no real reason to re-record them.

Martin Scorsese fanboy; Can prove in 140-characters why Michael Bay is a hack, and I enjoy a bit of Gridiron at the weekends.
