Having one of your favourite bands breakup is difficult enough without knowing there was a full album of new songs so close to release.

Before the breakup, progress on My Chemical Romance's fifth album seemed promising. Work on the record had begun at the start of 2012, and guitarist Frank Iero was quoted as saying that early sessions with new drummer Jarrod Alexander were going well. But just over a year later the band had ended, so what on earth happened? In an interview with filmmaker Kevin Smith before the breakup, front man Gerard Way revealed that the album would return to the darkness of previous records. He also stated that the band were planning to meet Colleen Atwood, the costume designer for the Black Parade, generating massive hype regarding a new theatrical concept. In a 2014 interview with Grantland Podcasts, Way discussed the abandoned album, revealing it would have been titled The Paper Kingdom.
