15 Greatest Protest Songs Of The 21st Century

14. Bright Eyes – "When The President Talks To God"

Key Lyrics: "When the president talks to God // Are the conversations brief or long? Does he ask to rape our women’s rights and send poor farm kids off to die? // Does God suggest an oil hike?"

In 2003, President Bush spoke with Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas and casually mentioned how God told him to invade Afghanistan and Iraq. "God told me to strike at al Qaeda and I struck them," Bush said. "And then he instructed me to strike at Saddam Hussein, which I did." This wasn't a one-time conversation, either. On the campaign trail in 2004, Bush reportedly told a group of Amish citizens that "God speaks through me."

Although the White House later denied it, the controversy stirred Conor Oberst, frontman of indie-folk group Bright Eyes, to pen a ponderous -- and confrontational -- ode to the supposed chats between The Almighty and The President of the United States.

As far as protest songs go, this one's pretty on the nose. It's not especially deep or profound, but is instead a sober reminder that a leader's delusions can have terrifying consequences.

It certainly doesn't pull any punches in denouncing the ignorance of the President using Biblical-esque "conversations with God" as an excuse for invading another country.
