Old met new in 2016. And it did so at the hands of melodic Californian thrashers Holy Grail. Coming out in February, Times of Pride and Peril (Holy Grail's third album) was one of the very first indications that 2016 would be a fine, fine year for heavy metal.
The album is a masterclass in blending old-school speed metal with new-school melodies, channelling legends like Metallica, Kreator, Megadeth and Judas Priest, but injecting them with steroids thanks to a dose of heavy riffs, victorious sing-alongs and pounding rhythms.
If you're an old-fashioned metalhead with old-fashioned values and no faith in today's rock scene, Times of Pride and Peril may just lull you into thinking that the kids are alright.
