19. Giraffe Tongue Orchestra – Broken Lines

Supergroups have had a somewhat patchy history in the music history books. One band who look to change all that are prog-metal outfit Giraffe Tongue Orchestra. Leaving their ego’s at the door are members from Mastodon, The Dillinger Escape Plan, The Mars Volta and Alice In Chains, who experimented to an insane degree on their debut album this year entitled Broken Lines. The strange thing is – it’s actually fantastic.

The real revelation on this LP is the performance given by frontman William DuVall – one which sees him unshackled from the chains that restrain him on his work with Alice In Chains. Not to say that his voice doesn’t shine there, but he’s given much more free reign here to go wherever he pleases. Thanks to the group’s unorthodox compositions, there’s a plethora of ways for him to showcase his vocal chops.

Whatever you thought you knew about supergroups, disregard it with this lot. Their sound is so unique and ambitious that it’s easy to forget at times that this is a side-project. And really, that’s the best compliment that can be given to any aspiring supergroup.
