5 Albums With HORRIBLE Backstories

4. Blink-182 - Blink-182

By 2003, Blink-182 had firmly carved their name in pop-punk history. After major label smashes like Enema of the State and Take off Your Pants and Jacket, the band was being pushed to deliver more juvenile punk goodness.

However, at that point, guitarist and songwriter Tom Delonge had grown weary of the pop-punk and wanted to branch out musically. While on breaks from Blink, Delonge flexed his muscles in the post-hardcore side-project Box Car Racer with Blink drummer Travis Barker.

Once Blink reentered the studio, the trio never really got back on the same page. Bassist Mark Hoppus felt especially betrayed and wasn't completely on board with the more moody side of where Blink was going.

Upon release, this record stood as one of the most sophisticated artistic statements Blink had ever made. While the feel of the record is still pop-punk, there is a dark presentation and piano accentuations incorporated that feel closer to alt-rock than bratty punk throwdowns.

As great as the record is, the tensions amongst the guys caused the band to break up in 2005. While the band has moved on without Delonge, this album served as a fortunate result of how contentious the trio's songwriting had become.
