Here's how it went (allegedly - I didn't do ...Oh forget it...) "The Record Company", sometime 1980: The problem is, Martyn, you and Phil aren't, well, how we "in the trade" say, errr... "gelling"...And we€™re getting a lot of complaints from people that their milk is going missing€ So, to solve the problem, Martyn, what we would like you to do, errr... Martyn, is to errr€ leave the band... Martyn Ware: Eh? ME? Leave the band? I founded this band! It's MY F*cking band! Oh, F*ck off then! Some time later... "The Record Company": Ok, people, what have we got? We've got a lead singer...Nice haircut, by the way, Phil...yeah keep that, it's a nice angle. . .no, not the haircut, but...aha! Yes, it IS a nice ang...oh, never mind, what else have we got...oooh, is that a drum machine...didn't see that on Tomorrow's World! Anyway, how many songs have we got so far? Oh€ Oh dear....Can we not phone him up and say we've made a terrible...Who are you? Martin Rushent walks in. Speaks: "I. Have. A. Plan." At this point I would advise you to *cough* *ahem* "listen" to the "Making of Dare" CD where you will discover the missing link between the above "conversation" and the final masterpiece that was actually released. Only you won€™t, all you will hear is some demos that even Vice Versa would turn their noses up at. How did they do it? Answer? Martin Rushent. He didn't sleep, apparently. Now he does. RIP. God bless, Martin. And what ever became of Martyn Ware, I hear you say? Well, not a... (Oh? Really?). Seriously, if Martyn hadn't left at that time, Dare wouldn't have been the album it turned out to be and Heaven 17 wouldn't have existed. Which would have been a shame. "We're doing some tracks with Tina Turner next week, her record company isn't too keen, but hey, we'll see". Martyn Ware Is A Living God. He invented Industrial Music. Oh yes he did. Listen to: This. Then listen to Reproduction and Travelogue. And then you will realise that Martyn Ware Is A Liv€ (oh, I€™m rambling aren€™t I?)
