6 Popular Songs With Meanings Nobody Knows

No coherent meaning, no problem.

Did you know that Prince's Purple Rain was actually about the end of the world? Probably not. If the late singer himself hadn't elaborated on the song's subjects people would probably still be tossing theories out and seeing if they stick.

So that was one instance where the mystery was solved, but there have been many other songs with lingering questions. Songs that may really grab you, but when you have a chance to actually pay attention to the lyrics, perhaps when you're not in your car in a hurry to get somewhere, that you realize something - they make no rational sense in any way, shape or form.

In some cases, this is done on purpose. For whatever reason, the artist has decided to just mess with the listening audience. Other times it can be something like references to something profound in an odd, coded message.

Whether you love this type of music, have an intense dislike for it or something somewhere in between, theses kinds of songs have been around for a long time and likely will be for a long time to come.

6. Flightless Bird, American Mouth - Iron & Wine

Featuring an almost achingly tender melody, this is the kind of song that can really add to a love story. And so it did, prominently featured in the original Twilight movie and again in the franchise's fourth installment.

If you're not really paying attention to the words, you would probably easily assume that it's a love song dedicated to someone special. But then if you start paying attention you might start hearing things like 'long baby hair' and 'fat house cat' and a lot of other random things and then it may dawn on you that you have no idea what you're listening to.

Theories to the meaning behind the song have been many. Is it a veiled story about belief in God? Could it be about the corruption of America's youth or some kind of political message? Might it actually be about a man looking his lost love?

At this point, there hasn't been a definitive answer.

I like to think I'm a clever person, but apparently I'm not clever enough to come up with a witty biography.
