9 Great Closing Tracks On Albums

8. Rock N Roll Suicide - The Rise And Fall Of Ziggy Stardust [David Bowie]

David Bowie''s persona changes are legendary at this point. From the Thin White Duke to Major Tom, the guy had an entire backlog of greatest character pieces. But Ziggy Stardust is by far his popular creation and it's fitting that one of his most successful albums features Ziggy front and center.

As Ziggy's glam alien persona becomes to much for the world, he has to end up breaking up his band and venture out to new lands. It's pretty bleak to have a closing track mentioning suicide, but the song's ending is more optimistic as Bowie screams "Oh love, you're not alone" as the orchestra builds behind him. It then leaves on a hypnotic chorus of backing vocals chanting "Wonderful," giving this doomed planet a glimmer of hope for the future.

The album ends on a bittersweet note. Even though Ziggy will no longer be a part of this world, his mark is felt everywhere. Funny how Ziggy's death mirrors Bowie's own death. You're sad the life is over but are smiling because it happened.

It's a song with a rock energy but with a certain theatrical swagger. And I'm sure Bowie wouldn't want it any other way.
