It was a typical British summer’s night at the Etihad on Friday night, waterproofs, scarves and woolly hats all making an unwanted reappearance from the wardrobe. But no-one was ever going to care, after all, it’s not often you’re able to see a true legend perform right in front of your eyes.
If you look up cool in the dictionary, you’ll find a picture of Bruce Springsteen…he’s not only cool, he’s effortlessly cool, unlike ‘stars’ of the music world today who have to resort to gimmicky names (Will.i.am) or taking all their clothes off (Rihanna and pretty much the majority of female pop artists).
Bruce put the younger artists of the world to shame, with his epic 30 track set lasting 3 hours 17 minutes (without intermission) proving that at 62 years of age he still has the energy to outdo even the best of today’s live performers (Coldplay’s 20 track set list at the o2 arena last year paling in comparison).
The Boss started strong with ‘Badlands’ and ‘No Surrender’, meticulously integrating old classics like ‘Atlantic City’ with some tracks from ‘Wrecking Ball’ such as the rocking ‘Death to My Hometown’ and the beautiful ‘Jack of All Trades’. The main highlights of the pre-encore show being a haunting solo piano performance of ‘The Promise’ and the ever current ‘The River’ (“lately there ain’t been much work on account of the economy”).
Whilst the first couple of hours was exceptional, it was slow burning, drawing the crowd in and building anticipation for what we all knew was coming…and boy did it come. What had gone before was almost forgotten the instant the classic harmonica intro to ‘Thunder Road’ echoed throughout the stadium…the crowd roared and at that moment the heavens opened on the Etihad Stadium, almost as if Bruce himself had torn the heavens down.
From then on in there was no rest bite as The Boss along with the absurdly awesome Steve Van Zandt (AKA Silvio from the Soprano’s) and the rest of the E Street band rocked out classic after classic. Springsteen’s performance of ‘Born to Run’ is perhaps one of the greatest things I’ve witnessed in my life, I’ve never heard a crowd so pumped and so engaged. Nothing could ever match ‘Born to Run’ but performances of ‘Bobby Jean’, ‘Dancing in the Dark’ and the surprising finale of the Beatles classic ‘Twist and Shout’ came pretty damn close.

Great review man.
Thanks mate, I’ve never reviewed a concert before so it was a new experience for me!
Terrific review. Does justice to an incredible night and an astonishing artist.
That sounds like such a great gig, Curtis. Now I can’t wait to see him tomorrow at the Isle of Wight, if only on TV. That is assuming Sky will show more than 30 minutes as they did last night of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers.
you cannot help but be amazed at this MAN’S talent and awestruck by the band he has created! i was also at manchester about my 9th springsteen concert to date and as long as he keeps playing i will be hopefully next time dancing in the dark on stage with the boss before i die!!!!
your review is on the wrecking ball. respect!
I saw Springsteen at Manchester back on the Magic Tour, this time I was in my hometown of Sunderland when he rolled into town, right at the front next to the central walkway. I have been a fan of Springsteen’s music for over fifteen years and I think this was a concert that will never be topped. Standing next to – and even touching the man – is just something in describable. You can feel his energy, you can feel his passion, and unlike many other artists he’s not out to rip off his fans with Meet and Greets for £500 or extra charges to be at the front of the pit. This review sums up not just one, but every concert the Boss does.
Wish I’d been there. Great review.
Awesome, makes me want to get tickets, anyone got any?
WHAT A NIGHT, I CAN’T BELIEVE THE ENERGY THE THE RAWNESS THE PASSION THE BOSS STILL PUTS INTO HIS AWESOME MUSICAL EVENTS AFTER ALL THE YEARS PERFORMING. I FIRST SAW HIM ON THE RIVER TOUR IN 1980 AND THE MAN AND HIS PERFECT E STREET BAND CONTINUE TO TAKE THE ADORING CROWD TO A PLACE ALL MODERN DAY MUSICSIONS FIND IMPOSSIBLE TO ACHIEVE.
BRILLIANT ,TOTALLY BRILLIANT !
well said-best gig i`ve seen since newcastle`81 when my life changed and no one understands unless they`ve seen him ilve X All the best -we saw greatness and I don`t know how to explain this to people that we`rent there
i was privileged to him in leeds 1985/86 and never thought it could be topped, but last night in manchester it was like 26 years had gone and he just gets better and better never thought it could b e done!! he blow us away , what a amazing man x cannot wait to see him again
Been waiting 27 years to see the boss Manchester was awesome
Great review of an awesome concert. Second time I’ve seen The Boss but been a fan since the 70s. He is just incredible and, even without The Big Man, The E Street Band are amazing musicians. Tribute to Clarence did bring a tear to my eye and, probably all true fans. Special mention for Jake who made a good job of filling The Big Man’s shoes.
Amazing display from a unique guy,one of THE all round greatest performers ever – 200 minutes of raw energy with the tightest band ever put together – can’t go without mentioning the excellent Nils Lofgren, certainly the greatest living guitarist (sorry all you Clapton fans).
Excellent review Curtis!!
I have seen the Boss more times than I care to remember and have to say he gets better and better! Did Sunderland Thursday and manchester yesterday and have to say I ache and I am hoarse but stand actually on the barrier on both nights and get a touch was the most incredible feeling, and also to experience the gig at Manchester with my 26 year old daughter (something I’ve wanted to do for a long time)was simply the best!!
All I can say now is bring on Hyde park – it’s Boss time!!!
What a night!! Big respect to Jake he nailed the sax solo in badlands and never looked back. I had tears in my eyes for the tributes to Danny and Clarence during my city of ruins as long as we are here and you are here then they are here. Then to see the big man on screen at the end was beautiful
been a springsteen fan since the 70′s in a big way, dont think theres many that can match him, last night in manchester was amazing, even our lovely british weather did not spoil, the atmosphere once got going with the river and thunder road{old favourites} was fantastic. everybody around us on the pitch were joining in, i thought it was emotional showing clips of clarence,clements.amazing. the only thing i missed was my three kids, all mid to late twenties, brought up on springsteen and e street, would of loved them there
Fantastic night of music, energy, talent, ambience, Bruce was energetic, humorous, talented, wow loved it , thanks to my wonderful husband Mike for my 60th birthday treat xxxx
You couldn’t have put it better. I’m 27, i’ve seen the Eagles, Steve Earle, Oasis, Bon Jovi, Muse, Leonard Cohen, Billy Joel, Madness, Iron maiden, Metallica, Roger Waters – I could keep going, I’ve been quite fortunate in my short time on this planet!
Nothing compares!
As you say, I could quite happily never see another concert again. It was frankly, astonishing! I’m quite a big fan (only been listening a few years though), I could easily compile 30 songs that’d make an awesome Springsteen gig and I didn’t know half of the songs he ended up playing (can’t believe I didn’t know the River!!! new favourite song of the moment!!) No band or act can boast that kind of repertoire!
Eagles and Oasis? Well jealous. I saw Muse at Wembley a couple of years ago, but in general I’m not a fan. Paul McCartney is probably the only concert I’ve been to that is even in the same league as the Boss.
great review chris!! we were lucky enough to be at the concert and i have to say its the best i have ever seen!!! even the weather couldn’t put a dampener on the night!!!
bruce springsteen has soooo much energy he would put a 20yr old to shame!!!
lets get this “Bruce not Bieber” campaign going!!!!
It’s Curtis not Chris, but I’ll let you off for your support for the “Bruce not Bieber” campaign :P Thanks for your comment Linda.
Great review curtis!! I was fortunate enough to be at the gig, really was amazing! I’ve been lucky to see various artists i.e queen, michael jackson, u2, robbie williams, oasis, ub40, erasure, beautiful south to mention but a few, but none of these made me feel like i felt watching this unbelievable performsnce. The man was awsome!!! can’t wait to see him again!!
Hi Curtis,
What a wonderful review. You need to consider a career change. I read hundreds of reviews of Bruce shows but few capture so well the magic and excitement of his shows and why so many of us follow him to the ends of the earth again and again just to experience what you felt the other night.
Manchester – As you know the weather was horrific. I was fully Goretexed up and it was still hell. We arrived around 7pm on the Thursday night and I was 49. Roll calls came and went until Man City security moved the entire pit queue away from the stadium to allow them to build separate crash barrier queues at every single turnstile. The fans were trying to tell them about our system but you could tell they were not interested. Eventually we got 1 to 50 in front of a turnstile, 51 to 100 in front of the next etc etc. We were in front of the 4th turnstile along. So effectively fan 901 was first in their queue and in same position as fan 1 who had slept out for 2 nights ! We were told stadium security would open the turnstiles in order to allow the first queue in first. ie guys 1 to 50 admitted first, then 51 to 100 next. etc etc. It sounded dodgy to me as it was obvious all turnstiles all the way round the ground would likely open at the same time. Then they made us wait for hours in freezing horrendous conditions for bands. We were there until around 4pm waiting. I went into some kind of spasm shivers! Totally unable to stop my body making huge jerky shivers while stadium security looked down at us laughing in appalling conditions. A total disgrace. There was no sign of Graeme today with bands. This time Stadium security dispensed them and it was a shambles. Newcomers were simply writing numbers on their hands and getting bands before people who had queued in freezing rain for hours. I was a young brunette girl in tshrt and leggings and dry hair who clearly had just arrived writing numbers on peoples hands. They were laughing and taking the piss out of us and then simply running up to security, showing the made up number and being handed a band while we had to wait. It was a disgrace. She did it to at least 50 people that I saw. These newly banded fans then simply ran round to a turnstile with no queue and were effectively first in line for the pit!!! They made us wait until just after 5, then as all the real pit fans where chanting “numbers numbers” in a vain attempt to remind Manchester City to open up our turnstiles in order, we watched in horror as every single turnstile in the stadium was opened at the same time. Fans who had queued for days and since dawn like us, simply watching cheats stream in and steal our places. We had been drenched, frozen and left standing for hours for nothing!. We ran into the arena and saw in disbelief the ground GA maybe 30 deep at the pit wall, and the pit itself 40% as we got in.We slumped into the seating section in disbelief. Wet to the bone, shivering, looking at 49 on my hand and looking at thousands ahead of us already in place. We were gutted. Imagine the people who had slept since Wednesday looking at that!
THE GIG ITSELF WAS MIND BLOWING. We watched in awe from the back of the pit, as Bruce made up for the horrendous conditions by giving us the rarities discussed elsewhere. A setlist that will never be bettered as far as Im concerned and the greatest Springsteen performance I have ever seen. The best gig I have ever seen. Did he know what had gone on? Did he do to make up to the people who slept and shivered for days and hours in vain? I dont know. Faith will be rewarded I guess. If you stole our places, and cheated and stole our numbers, you are a disgrace to the magnificent, charming, well mannered, intelligent Springsteen fans I have met everywhere on my travels. You shamed UK Bruce fans, but I doubt your reading this on Bruces forum as your casual numpties who are better placed at an Oasis gig. You didnt deserve that concert of a lifetime on the front rows. Pearls to swine. To Manchester City security and staff, you are an embarrassment and are incompetent at your jobs. I wish your club nothing but failure and will even support Man United ahead of you, and from a Liverpool fan, thats saying something!
Something needs to be done with the pit queue in the UK. Its just failed twice and no doubt will again at a festival like Hyde Park. If we are going to keep this system it needs Bruces guys to get involved earlier and help us. We shouldnt be left to fend for ourselves and be abused by Stadium security who dont care. Most people who roll up at 2 or 3pm dont expect to get the price positions in the pit, they are happy with the pit, somewhere. However the 300 / 400 fans who sleep out and arrive at dawn in the rain, deserve to get the decent spots. How hard is that to sort out? Doesnt sound like rocket science to me, but Bruce’s crew have to sort it. If they dont want, ok. then its time for the US lottery system, as the current one no longer works. Whatever system we go with we have to be led by Bruces crew as a free for all mellee conducted by incompetent stadium security is not fair on the best fan base in music
Just curious…did you get there at 7 pm Thursday & got #49 or 7 am Friday and got #187. It looks like you cut & pasted this post from another site…either you changed the numbers to garner more sympathy or you weren’t really impacted & you really liked their post. I guess it doesn’t really matter, just thought it was odd.
I’ve been a fan of Bruce for about 15 years and Ive seen him live only twice, the first time in Cardiff, and the second time in The etihad In Manchester on the 22-06-2012 and I can easily say it was the best concert I’d ever been too! It was just simply amazing! I’ve seen all his live performances on DVD and so on but this was just such a fantastic performance!! When Clarence passed away (rip big man) I thought the E street band would never be close to being the same, although Clarence is irreplaceable his nephew Jake Clemons who is the new saxophonist in the E street band, brought the spirit of the big man back on to the stage infront of the 60,000 fans!! He was awsome along with the brass section and the rest of the E street band was just magic!!! I also would be happy to never go and see another concert other than Springsteens because I know id just be disapointed!! The fact I’m actually writing a review just goes to show it was an amazing concert! It’s as simple as that!
Best review I have read of the Manchester show. You really captured the mood and atmosphere of the night. This show is now widely being considered as one of the best, if not the best ever show he has done in the UK. And that is saying something..
Spot on review Curtis,I have seen the Boss 23 times now in Britain,Europe and the USA.and Friday nights show was easily the best by far, mind blowing, awesome.Cant wait for Wrigley field now in september.
Spot on apart from the fact he didn’t play Bobby Jean
I’m certain he played Bobby Jean, it came straight after Born to Run.
He didn’t play Bobby Jean at the Stadium of Light (Sunderland) though, so maybe thats what you’re thinking of.
Yes he certainly played Bobby Jean straight after Thunder Road and Born to Run. 3 of my favourites in one stint!!
great review – can’t add anything to it. Caught the Elvis Costello interview on sky arts – great show – note Bruce’s tribute to Sam and dave for inspiring his stage presence. Bruce aspired to these great soulful singers who he perceived as ‘band leaders’ and he cultivated his stage shows around this idea. Hence you get what you all got at the Etihad 40 years down the road. Bruce is from a time where you had to entertain – and he did so from the broken down bars in Asbury Park to the stadiums of today. The criticisms of modern artists are appropriate – there has been a move from ‘Im here to entertain you’ to a modern approach ‘you worship me coz Im famous and I have a couple of hits on mtv or I won the x factor’. Its very sad and Bruce remains an even truer great in the midst of today’s mediocrity, I feel sorry for the kids today grwoing up on substandard rap and lewd posturing- as this is the essence of modern music.
I feel exactly the same as you, and I AM a kid of today…I’m just glad I was raised on music like Bruce, The Beatles, The Stones, The Eagles etc. There is some decent music around like Mumford and Sons and Bon Iver, but nothing that I can see being considered ‘classic’ in 20 years time.
I have been a fan of Bruce for 27 years and had never managed to see him until this brilliant Manchester gig. We drove all the way from Cornwall to see him and were not disappointed!! Bruce was beyond brilliant and is back to his gritty protest roots. The playlist was amazing – almost all my favourites there with the exception of Hungry Heart. But I would have been happy with just his singing of Thunder Road. Where he gets his energy from is a mystery!! It was a very emotional thing to see him, he has seen me through many good and bad times in my life and as you say in your great review Curtis, I don’t need to see another gig ever again. I have seen brilliance and I have seen perfection. Bruce is the Boss!!
Brilliant review of a brilliant concert. Just as good as his Born in the USA tour I saw in Wembley all those years ago. He’s a sexy dude even now! Keep on rocking Brucie!!!
The gig was fantastic! And to top it off Bruce pulled up my boy to sing Waitin’ On A Sunny Day! A moment we will both treasure forever! Thanks Bruce! Just wish I had a still shot of them both together!
I did add a video though, not got a pic. Check out

good vid of your lad
I agree with gary regarding pit, we got there at 10 am, stood for most of the day and then headed off to Asda for a coffee at about 2pm as weather was atrocious. Got back about 4pm for the gates as we were not going to try to get to front of queue as wasnt fair to the fans that carried on queueing after we left and was shocked by the toal lack of respect and humilty from the security guys who couldnt give a toss for the pit guys. I just hope that the guys who camped out since thursday (numbers 1 and 2 from Scotland, Tommy I think) managed to get to the front. I think its great that Bruce is finding a new audience but with that comes the fans who don’t know the pit queue ettiqute or couldn’t give a monkeys for it. I was also fuming at the fans we were near who decided to chat all the way through the promise, and the guys who get running up behind us when we was at the right podium and trying to push us out of the way to get near. But yes, the gig was one of the best I’ve seen, roll on Hyde Park. And also to reply to Gary, there will be no pit at Hyde Park. Just camp up in front of a screen and enjoy the atmosphere and party, you wont get near the front cos the young Bruce wannabees with their facebook phones will push and pull you out of the way to show how close they were on their wall!!!
