Fire At Night are a three-piece Alternative Rock band featuring Adam on drums, Mark on bass and Scott on lead vocals and guitar. They are from the Surrey/Hampshire borders and have their second EP due for release on the 25th January. The band has gone through a slight line-up change since their first EP (Paradigm 14) and the sound has kept true, and I like that. One track to definitely look up on their first EP is 'Gravity', a wicked song. David provided some of the electronics on show, and Avril supplied bass lines prior to Mark joining. www.soundcloud.com/fireatnight is the place to go if you would like to hear it. So, onto the latest EP... We start with a little intro called 'Open Road', which sets you up for the explosion that is track 2, 'Neophyte'. Neophyte is a proper rock song; big drum beats, big guitar riffs and a strong vocal presence throughout. It has a slight Foo Fighters vibe about it, and maybe a dash of Embrace as well. Good all round songs, and a strong opener. Track 3 is called 'Always'. Here we start mellow and then slowly ramp up the sound with prominent bass lines and a consistent guitar riff. Towards the end, the song breaks into a more instrumental display, showing off the band€™s talent as musicians. After listening to this, whether you are in San Diego, Chicago, New York or anywhere else; you will want to pick up the guitar and start jamming. Track 4 brings us 'Lust'. A melodic start which focuses more on the vocals of Scott, as they are the most prominent feature of the song. The latter half of the song sees a very well produced section of multiple vocals, multiple guitar riffs and some other synth sounds creating a different atmosphere to the beginning. A good display of the band€™s production ability. Track 5, their lead song 'Dumb (This Is What I Can't Say)'. This, along with Neophyte are the best tracks on this EP. Dumb is a great example of something simple sounding excellent. The riffs and drum lines are steady and consistent at the start, which sticks to the notion of progressive alternative rock, as their sound literally progresses throughout the song. We start slow and steady, and end with a massive crescendo of drums, bass, riffs and vocals. Excellent song; great lyrics and check out the video posted at the top of this article; you will no doubt love it too. If you buy the CD version (for the tiny sum of £3.00), you get a QR code which gives you access to two bonus tracks. The first one is called 'Ivy'. Ivy is totally different from the album, as it features significantly more synths and electronic percussion. It has a slightly liquid dubstep feel to it and shows a complete contrast to the album. Definitely worth a listen, as it is unusual - the good kind of unusual. The second bonus track is an acoustic version of Dumb. Again, great song, it€™s just that in this version it lacks the same punch the regular version does, but you€™d expect that with an acoustic version. Overall, the second EP from this trio is excellent and well worth a listen if you like alternative rock with a dash of electronica thrown in. Go and pre-order/buy (depending when you read this) from their band-camp page here. For the price of £1.50, you'd be mad not to. From me, a solid 4/5.
