Florence Welch: Her 10 Best Songs

Florence Welch

In comparison to the last artist I wrote about - Lana Del Rey €“ Florence Welch isn't dismissed as a manufactured act. However, I still don't think that she is taken as remotely seriously as she deserves to be, she is one of our most weirdly wonderful musical talents but sometimes it's easy to forget that. Collaborating with the likes of Dizzy Rascal and Calvin Harris has been viewed in certain quarters with some cynicism, but I don't think she's remotely calculated, she just enjoys making music with artists she likes. I genuinely believe Florence is the weirdest star the UK has seen since Morrissey. But let's start at the beginning. The first time I encountered Florence the story I read was simple, here's a new artist that we should all adore €“ literate, sassy, ethereal and classic. It was at a time when we needed a new authentic female hero in the midst of all the Brit School lot, who all seemed like calculated careerists with no real love for music. So I listened to 'Kiss with a fist' but felt underwhelmed. However, there was something in the interview that made me think 'Surely you've got something better than that?' And so I gave her another try and listened to 'Dog days are over', and I got it and then some. The more I heard the more I got her, and as much as I loved it, part of me thought this will never catch on, she's too weird, too kooky, the conservative UK listening public aren't going to get this? She writes songs of white hot intensity, heartbreak and darkness, but there's hope in there too. Florence has an amazing voice, is a peerless wordsmith. This is someone who belongs to the pantheon of idiosyncratic, unique, trailblazing female artists such as Kate Bush, Liz Fraser and Stevie Nicks. What encourages me about - If I may be so bold €“ Flo, is that she gets better with every record. This makes me hope that the wild rumours about what she's going to do next - such as writing an opera or having a lead role in the next Star Wars film are untrue and she sticks to her true calling, which is the music. The songs I'm going to write about here are all amazing in their own right, but I think that her next record may knock every single one of them off the list. To come back to the Kate Bush reference, I confidently predict the next record will be her 'Hounds of Love', a totally weird concept record that has enough hits on there to please the masses and plenty of oddities to keep the diehards sweet. Well, that's the dream. So here are ten songs to remind you why she's so good and why you should be counting each day until album number three is with us.

What makes music fantastic? Star quality, amazing music, breathtaking lyrics and the ability to bring something new to the table, even if that means a new take on the classics. That's what I love to listen to and write about. As well as writing for What Culture, I occasionally write a blog http://tedney.blogspot.co.uk and sometimes use Twitter, but sparingly @TedneyNash
