Iron Chic - "The Constant One" Album Review: All 11 Tracks Analyzed

3. (Castle) Numbskull €“ The band begins the third song on the album, "(Castle) Numbskull," by exploring a subdued rock atmosphere that sees Lubrano crooning smoothly, willfully restraining himself from the max effort bellowing fans are accustomed to hearing from him. Later on, the song bursts open for the chorus, with gang vocals supporting Lubrano as he belts out the lines, "A whole life in front of me / so why must I drag my feet? / I can't feel a f**king thing / standing in place / wind in my face / but it can't knock me down." By slowing down the pace and lowering the volume for the beginning of the song, the band creates a dynamic contrast that allows the chorus to soar higher and connect with the listener on a deeper level than the quick paced punk slamming that comprises the majority of the band's compositions. The song impressively sustains the listeners high until the end, thanks to the foul mouthed resolve of the chorus and chanting gang vocals. 4. Wolf Dix Road €“ On track four, the band deliver a very good, very typical Iron Chic song. The band may employ simple chord progressions and uncomplicated drum rhythms on almost all their songs, but Iron Chic's music has an indefinable, highly addictive pull thanks to the combination of Lubrano and guitarist Phil Douglas' vocals that meld together to create a singular, urgent voice. The song's undulating vocal melodies act as a nice contrast to the straightforward, linear chord progressions, producing a swaying rhythmic element to the band's music. The song also benefits from the extended, (for Iron Chic anyway) four minute running time, which allows the band to inject songwriting ornamentations such as the short bridge section which features sparse guitar and echoing gang vocals.
