Led Zeppelin: 10 Best Songs

5. The Rover

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3iEgijyJbAg One of Zeppelin's lesser known tracks now, and it comes as the second listing on their sixth studio album, Physical Graffiti. The history behind this song coincides well with its title - the word 'rover' being used to describe a type of wanderer, or nomad - and the song itself enduring multiple changes over a number of years before finally being released. The Rover was initially written by Plant and Page at the Welsh retreat of Bron-Yr-Aur (a name which also lends itself to two Zeppelin tracks) and recorded as an acoustic piece, with the intention of including it on their 1973 album Houses Of The Holy. But it wasn't to be, and The Rover metaphorically retreated into musical limbo, where Jimmy Page taught it the Zeppelin way, by laying down a distinctly heavier riff, and applying a Phase Shifter effect to make it worthy enough for release to the general populace. Unfortunately for every living person at the time, the band never played it live, despite numerous videos on Youtube showing them rehearsing it. The opening bars were used as an introduction to Sick Again during the 1977 North America Tour, but nothing beyond that - and so, for compensation, it's only fair we place it at number 5 on the list.
