sid viscious The band's manager Malcolm Maclaren always envisioned him as the front man but Sid's role in The Sex Pistols was as the bass player. The funny thing about all that was Sid couldn't actually play bass. He only got his place in the band because he looked good with a guitar. It is believed that when the band's only true album Nevermind The Bollocks was recorded Sid's bass guitar wasn't even plugged in. Once he'd left the studio the lead guitarist Steve Jones recorded all of Sid's parts. Many modern era hardcore bands have taken this 'style' as their inspiration and will often play in a similar thrashy manner with minimal emphasis on musical harmony. Many of these bands list Sid's almost non-existent style as the primary reason they formed a band in the first place. Not bad when the most he ever did with a guitar was smash someone in the face with it.
