It has been said in the past that if there was a hypothetical CD that Kylie Minogue would be the A-side and her younger sister, Dannii, would be the B-side.
A fictitious sisterly rivalry created by the tabloids in the early 1990s saw Kylie and Dannii pitted against each other in terms of looks, style, music and career progression – that often saw the former come out on top.
But in 2013, with both sisters vehemently denying any envy or jealousy of each others personal or professional lives, I’m having a look at how the popularity gap has narrowed tremendously between the two Minogue sisters.
At the beginnings of Dannii Minogue’s career, she was Australia’s sweetheart. Appearing on Young Talent Time as a permanent cast member, she captured the hearts of millions of viewers a week and became one of the most sought after talents in the nation.
Despite being more famous in her native country, Neighbours proved a unprecedented career vehicle for Kylie and rocketed her into superstardom in the UK, which is the most important market for both sisters.
As Dannii took her music and acting to Europe in the early 1990s, it was in the ominous shadow of platinum selling Kylie Minogue. Dannii had a dark, almost punk image at that time. The tabloids slated her for being the fat, ugly and rebellious sister who was clinging onto the fame of her girl-next-door and innocent sister.
She was fighting an up hill battle and her mysterious Gothic-esque appearance couldn’t have been further apart from Kylie. In interviews she was referred to as the “other one” and with the entire nation in love with Kylie, Dannii had to put up with more questions about her sisters career, than her own.
Naturally, Dannii tried to improve her appearance with some extensive plastic surgery over the years. She has openly admitted to a breast augmentation, that she is particularly proud of. Her 1995 come back saw her radically change, losing weight and dying her hair a platinum blonde. She also featured on the cover of the highest selling copy of Australian Playboy ever, so men started to pay attention.
Botox was a staple for the star in the early 2000s and comparing photos of early 20′s to what she looks like today, her face has completely changed. While not admitting what she has had done, it definitely appears that a face lift, brow lift and numerous fillers have been done over the years.
But I have to say, Dannii is looking fantastic. It just goes to show if done sparingly, plastic surgery can really create results. Her face doesn’t looked pulled or distorted and there is a faux-naturl beauty that she pulls of so well. Her short cropped hair, natural lashes and gorgeous teeth are complimented by an altered jaw shape, that appears to have first popped up in time for the 2009 season of the X Factor.
The once other sister persona has been totally broken down, into the modern day fashion icon Dannii Minogue. Joining the judging panel of Britain and Ireland’s Next Top Model, Dannii is finally being recognised as a model standard beauty, cementing her, albeit manufactured, stunning looks. Lets give her 4 out 5 Minogue stars.
