Top 20 Classic Queen Tracks

20. A Kind Of Magic

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YWf5BLUOhNM Released in 1986 on the album of the same name, 'A Kind Of Magic' was written specifically for the film 'The Highlander' which starred Christopher Lambert and Sean Connery. The film €“ which dealt with an immortal race of warriors competing for the ultimate prize €“ was viewed by Queen prior to its theatrical release. The band then hurriedly composed several tracks based on their impressions of various scenes and dialogue with the film, with 'A Kind Of Magic' itself being a phrase Lambert uses in the film to describe his immortality to a child who witnesses him being shot to death and then waking up again. Probably one of the greatest things about this song is its direct lyrical relation to the plot of movie. Describing such things as "this race which lives a thousand years," Mercury essentially describes the film's backstory and the main characters' impending predicaments. If ever there was ever doubt that Mercury could sing the phone book and get away with it, this song is the proof, as it has since become both the film's theme song, embedded in popular culture along the way. Highlander built up a strong cult following and went on to produce several sequels, and even a long running television series, which relied heavily on the Queen track 'Princes of the Universe' for its soundtrack. Although 'Princes...' featured on the 'Kind Of Magic' album, it didn't gain much press upon its initial release €“ which is a real shame €“ as it features Lambert and Mercury actually engaging in a sword fight during the music video!

First studied Journalism in Ireland in 2003, returning to Sunderland University on the tenth anniversary of my first studies in the subject to continue towards an MA. Interested in all sorts including WWE, Music, Film, TV and Games. Has travelled around a bit to places like California, Ontario and Mexico and plans to do more of the same soon again. Recently I've been writing pieces on my favourite topics which have included obscure theme music from nostalgic shows, Guns N' Roses and a few other surprises I'll be happy to share in time!
