New Zealand actor KJ Apa is having himself quite the year thanks to his rise to fame with the hit TV series Riverdale. But, had things had gone differently, Apa's 2017 would have been a whole lot better if the movie he starred in, A Dog's Purpose, hadn't barked up the controversy tree.

Back when the film was set to be released a video appeared from the set that showed one of the dogs involved in the filming allegedly being mistreated. This sparked a boycott of the film that dramatically hurt its box office earnings, not to mention an official investigation into the reports of animal cruelty. Though the report concluded that the video was misleading and no animals were injured during filming, that didn't stop KJ Apa from getting a whole bunch of death threats over his involvement in the film.

Despite the fact that Apa never worked with the dog from the video, or that he would have had no hand in the animal's handling even if he had, that didn't stop anonymous internet commenters from wishing death upon the actor. In fact, the threats got so violent that Apa had to issue a public statement on his social media profiles. In the statement the actor said that he loves animals and was troubled by reports of abuse on set, even though he never saw any firsthand.
