5. Japan Eating KFC
Theres a word in Japanese that describes people with an obsessive interests: Otaku and I think this can be applied to their Christmas intake. This tradition isn't so much rooted in ancient history as the others because for the Japanese Christmas means one thing: Fried chicken from KFC. Forget your puddings or your Turkey or your roast veggies. Its all about Kentucky. The 25th of December is not an official holiday in Japan but theres still a real festive spirit in the air mainly brought to you buy Western shops and bill boards. Poultry is also a rarity which explains why they love the Colonel so much. The Christmas Chicken frenzy started around 1970 when the fast food chain noticed an increase in sales around the holidays. The company decided to cash in on this occurrence and they created advertisements that portrayed fried chicken as an integral part of the Japanese Christmas Eve. The slogan is annoyingly simple yet clearly very effective: CHRISTMAS = KENTUCKY. The Japanese reserve big buckets months in advance and stand in queues that snake around buildings. This year Japan Airlines will service KFC on board of their Select Flights as part of the KFC tradition. The chicken is packaged in special Christmas editions of the KFC boxes. Finger Lickin Good.
