During the Halloween of 1998, Karl Jackson was being driven through the Bronx by his girlfriend. He was on his way to pick up his girlfriend's 9-year-old son from a party, when the vehicle he was riding in was struck by some eggs thrown by a group of teenagers. Angered, Jackson left the vehicle in order to confront them about the childish act. Rather than run away laughing, they began aggressively shouting and arguing with Mr. Jackson. He returned to his vehicle and sat back down. One of the teenagers promptly drew a gun, pointed it at Jackson's head, and pulled the trigger. Karl Jackson was killed instantly, and Curtis Sterling, the 17-year-old shooter, was given 20 years in prison. Every October, Sterling is said to receive a Halloween card in prison, reading "I'm glad you're still there," signed by Jackson's mother.
