As mentioned, the company began as a division of Lucasfilm, responsible for researching and creating digital film software as well as computer animated graphics. The Computer Graphics Division also put out a short animated feature titled The Adventures Of Andre & Wally B. in 1984, a film which used revolutionary technology for the time including hand-painted textures and motion blur.

It wasn't until 1986 when Apple's Steve Jobs bought the Computer Graphics Division from George Lucas that Pixar was truly born. Jobs established Pixar as its own independent company, and it was then that John Lasseter completed his directorial debut, Luxo Jr.

Despite being just a couple minutes long, Luxo Jr. was the first 3D CGI film to be nominated for the Best Animated Short Film Oscar. Not only that, but Pixar's iconic lamp was also born of Luxo Jr., which details the interaction between two desk lights.
