14 Reasons Why Dumfries Is Scotland's Best Hole

Dumfries wanted a Primark and everyone got upset when Debenhams turned up...

Dumfries And Galloway. Home of Scotland's best hole? Whether you're a local or you've had the privilege of visiting Dumfries in the South West of Scotland, you'll know that the town is sort of like marmite. However, instead of either loving it or hating it, you'll find that you do both. It's a rather sadistic relationship that you have with the place because if you're a local, you'll find yourself wanting to move away to one of nearest cities like Glasgow or Edinburgh in order to escape, but then you'll always be drawn back towards your home. You are a Doonhammer after all... So what makes Dumfries the winner of the best worst place in Scotland? You're certain that the local cuisine isn't the reason for it (you have your favourite Greggs shop on the High Street), and it's probably not the characters that you find in Dock Park at night, but if you've seen the Crichton Campus, the warm welcome that the locals give to one another as well as 'outsiders', then you'll know why Doonhammers are proud of their hometown; even if their football team aren't at the top of the league. Dumfries does the best with what it's got and when you discover the historic literary figures who had a lot of love for the town, you'll find it difficult to disagree with the likes of Rabbie Burns. The people of Dumfries are loyal, kind and welcoming and dispute the town having a bit of a bad reputation with its inhabitants making bad choices (like being one of those people that do their business in Dock Park at night), you can't deny that it's one of the best holes in Scotland.

14. It Has Dinosaurs

Real life dinosaurs!* You may be wondering where you can find the Indominus Rex in the park, but sadly, there isn't an attraction dedicated to it yet. But the Dino Park in Carrutherstown is a fun day out for the whole family and what other town in Scotland has a whole park that revolves around dinosaurs? Exactly. Which is what makes Dumfries so amazing because it clearly has its priorities straight. Fancy dress competitions, colouring in, fun facts and velociraptors. What more could you possibly wish for? *Dinosaurs are not real.
