Crop circles are bizarre, intricate and mysterious. They appear with such speed and attention to detail, that there's no way they could be the the work of two blokes from Southampton armed with nothing more than a plank of wood, a length of rope and way too much spare time?

Well, despite the fact that the aforementioned men from Southampton have actually come forwards and claimed responsibility for at least some of the most notable crop circle occurrences, there are still those who think that they're the work of extraterrestrials. The theories vary as to whether they're landing sites, reference labels or even messages to humanity that we've been too dumb to figure out yet.

One of the most compelling pieces of evidence for some is that flying saucers leave traces of nitrate in the soil, possibly as a result of the fuel they use. Amazingly, soil samples from crop circles have actually been shown to contain abnormal nitrate levels compared to normal soil samples, pretty convincing right?

Well, it would be, if it weren't for the fact that nitrates are a common component in many agricultural fertilizers. I mean, it could be alien fuel, science is all about exploring every possibility. But it's probably fertiliser.
