A Song Of Ice And Fire: Every Book Ranked Worst To Best

5. A Dance With Dragons: After The Feast

A Song Of Ice And Fire
Bantam

As if it wasn't enough that A Feast For Crows and Dreams and Dust run parallel to each other, part two of the latter is set chronologically after both, bringing back several characters featured in Feast that were omitted from Dance Part One. It is confusing to say the least, but it is great to see the point of view of Arya, Sansa, and Cersei again.

Part two follows part one in that it continues the several new elements, such as the Martell, Greyjoy, and Jon Connington story lines, and with just two books left to settle everything, is it too late to be adding in so many new threads to the already complicated arc?

After the Feast as a book balances between several huge moments that will impact the entire series, and continuing from part one in laying the groundwork for the next installment. Cersei completes her walk of atonement, Jon Snow is stabbed by his brothers at the Wall, and Daenerys is left at the mercy of a hoard of Dothraki.

All the while Martin slowly builds to the two huge battle sequences set to take place in The Winds of Winter - Yunkai's battle with Meereen, and the Battle of the Bastards. Since we are yet to see the pay off of this, it is hard to judge this particular book as a bridge to the next installment, but if the past is anything to go by, the author's patient approach will be incredibly rewarding.
