Banksy: 7 Great Artistic Achievements So Far

4. Banksy Vs Bristol Museum

In 2009, the street artist snuck into Bristol's Museum and Art Gallery where he replaced over 100 pieces of museum art with his own paintings and sculptures. Of course, in reality Banksy wouldn't be able to get away with replacing museum art without a degree of permission, so only two Bristol Museum officials were aware of the stunt Banksy would pull. To everyone else uninformed, it was a very surreal day at the museum. Imagine the confusion patrons felt when they witnessed a disguised Banksy and his crew of assistants physically removing famous art off the walls and replacing it with art that featured alien warships raining hell on the scenery of a classic landscape piece. Banksy gave many quality sculptures and paintings to the Bristol Museum, a surprise art gallery that unknowing but very lucky visitors got to witness. There was a whole wing in the museum filled with a beat down ice cream truck in toxic waste. A statue of a marble lion with the whip of a lion tamer in his mouth and an aged Tweety bird sitting in a bird cage all made for an impressive art display. For all the mystery that surrounds him, Banksy is still an artist who has a respect for the more professional art genres. Street art is a way for Banksy to "give back" to the community by having his work on public display.Through infiltrating the Bristol Museum and Art Gallery and replacing museum art with his own work in broad daylight is Banksy giving back to the audience and the art world in general in the only way he knows how, through enigmatic maneuvering.
