8. The Cursed Child

Ok, yes, this is a play, but the fact remains that it was also released as a book and, for millions of people, is the only way they're going to be able to experience the story of The Cursed Child (at least until the inevitable film in a decade or so). Thus it can also be judged as a book too.

It's easy to imagine how spellbinding parts of this must be on the stage, but it doesn't fully transfer to a book. It means a lot of what's on the page doesn't work the same way, obviously because it's intended to be seen, but there are also a couple of other issues as well: Ron feels closer to being one of the twins here, and it takes liberties with the mythology, for example its use of time-travel.

It does, however, have a very fun story, which flies past faster than a Firebolt, and it was great to be plunged back into the wizarding world, especially catching-up with where the main trio are now. But you can absolutely tell that it wasn't written by J.K. Rowling.
