What Happens When We Die?

9. Happiness, Peace... And Michelangeo

A secondhand account from Sapphoof describes their mother's experience. Her waking words lead one to wonder where her mind went after the moment of death.

"My mom had a brain aneurysm that was nearly fatal. Around the time that the doctors told us that she was going to die, she later related that after several hours of terrible pain, she only felt peace.

She described a lightness of being and relaxed happiness. The first words she spoke to me when she awoke were 'Isn't it so sad about Michelangelo?'"

Almost all accounts of NDEs describe a feeling of lightness or floating. It is very difficult to nail down the causes of the different sensations, but this could be to do with a flood of hormones released into the body in an attempt to protect it from the trauma of death - much like the rush of adrenaline after an injury that will block the pain for a short while. This dump of hormones could also be responsible for the previously mentioned sensation of "motherly love" as the brain trying to protect itself in a high-stress situation.
