People love superheroes because, well, they're super versions of ourselves.

Whilst many of us are satisfied to read about them and watch their adventures unfold on screen (and maybe even secretly pretend that you've got Professor X's powers sometimes, and try to move things with your mind when no one's looking - we won't tell anyone), there are those out there in the world of science that are striving to make those fictional super powers more of a reality.

We might never get a full blown superhero walking out of a scientific laboratory, but there's no harm in taking a little bit of inspiration here and there from the world of comic books and science fiction. After all, science has a long history of borrowing from fiction, it's how we've ended up with lasers, mobile phones, jet packs, 3D printers and even helicopters.

Who knows, much like the column inches currently devoted to waxing lyrical about the technology predicted by Star Trek, some day in the future, we could be writing fun science articles about how our shape shifting, cloud seeding and genome altering technology all found their roots in the humble comic book.

So, could the future look like your favourite Marvel movie?
