Role: PHP Web Developer

Location: Newcastle upon Tyne, WhatCulture.com is a multi-faceted entertainment site that is becoming a distinct new voice in journalism and growing at an incredible speed. We provide thoughtful, informative articles, features and videos to an ever-expanding audience of 10 million unique users each month.

We are seeking ambitious, talented, candidates to join our development team. You will play a key role in the on-going development of WhatCulture.com. As part of an initial core team, you will be expected to really get under the skin of the website and take forward development objectives, as well as present your own ideas. You will be passionate about both web development and our company. Working alongside our Head of Development, you will continue to progress WhatCulture.com in order to drive on-going success to the business; developing systems such as a "Quiz" functionality, optimising existing queries, and integrating with external APIs in order to optimise current site processes.

Required Skills & Experience

Thorough working knowledge of PHP and excellent OOP understanding;

Familiar with Linux / Unix command-line utilities;

Relational database design and methodologies;

Git version control.

Desirable skills




CSS transpilers (LESS, SCSS, PostCSS);



Front-end task runners (We use Gulp);

Knowledge of modern JavaScript practices (ES6, Browserify).
