The Chicago Cubs and St. Louis Cardinals are two of Major League Baseball's oldest teams, and the two squads have been rivals the entire time. With around 2,500 games played head-to-head, the Cubs and Cardinals have had some memorable clashes both in terms of baseball and brawling on the field. The franchises have also made some memorable trades, but very rarely do their players sign with one another as free agents.

The first shoe to drop came after the 2015 season when the Cubs defeated the Cardinals in the National League Division Series. After spending just one year with the Cardinals, Heyward became a free agent and signed with the rival Cubs for eight years and $184 million. The jeers from the crowd upon his return to St. Louis were deafening, and quite offensive according to some witnesses.

In 2016, Heyward was teammates with Dexter Fowler, and the two helped the Cubs end their 108-year World Series drought. Wanting to keep the two outfielders together, the Cubs offered Fowler a one-year deal worth $15.8 million, but he turned it down to head to St. Louis for five years and $82.5 million. Thankfully for Fowler, the Cubs' fans were a little more welcoming when he returned to Wrigley Field thanks to his play in the 2016 World Series.
