10 Biggest World Cup Upsets Of All Time

9. Ireland 1 - 0 Italy (1994)

Ireland beating Italy in a game of rugby would be anything but noteworthy, but when The Green Army defeated Italy in football at World Cup '94, it was a monumental victory for the Jack Charlton's men.

Americans with Irish ancestry are proud people and turned up in droves to support the Irish team with 75,338 people packed into the Giants Stadium in New Jersey. An early goal from former Liverpool midfielder Ray Houghton set the crowd alight and proved to be the only goal of the game.

A young Roy Keane featured in the Irish side but the star of the game was undoubtedly centreback Paul McGrath who managed to keep Italian stars Roberto Baggio and Giuseppe Signori at bay on a number of occasions to condemn Italy to their first-ever loss in their opening match of a World Cup campaign.

Ireland would ultimately bow out in the round of 16 against the Netherlands but their shock victory had cemented the team in Irish national team history. Italy would go on to reach the final, losing on penalties to Brazil.
