With such a wealth of success not seen since the beginning of time, the year of 2012 will always be synonymous with British sport. In no small part due to the spectacle that was the London Olympics now the whole world finally knows what most Brits have been shouting in vain for years and years “We ARE good at something!”
A nation who despite gifting the world such sporting pursuits as cricket, football, rugby and golf, and which hasn’t really won a lot recently, can smile smugly and hold its head a little bit higher once again.
Of course, in the plethora of triumphant underdogs and stellar achievements witnessed, not just in the nation’s capital, but also on the courts of Flushing Meadows and streets of Paris, a select few have emerged who stand out. It’s unfortunate that so many athletes who have dedicated their lives to reaching the summit of their sport (in itself a task that has defeated countless worthy individuals) are not all in the reckoning this year. It just goes to show how the task of deciding who will be crowned BBC Sports personality of the year 2012 is one of the hardest in living memory.
To help add fire to the debate that will rage until the ceremony on December 16th we have compiled a list of 10 contenders that have a chance to take the prize:

Please god, not Andy Murray…
Hope Andy Murray does get it. Anyone who doesn’t ‘get’ what he has achieved, against all the odds, needs to educate themselves. He has a biparte patella & damaged ankle ligaments which make it a miracle he is even playing sport at all – and a determination over a long period of time that is impressive.Add to that the fact that he came from humble beginnings and has been demonised by the press for years, his stoicism is an example to all.
You are not clearly not a tennis fan – or aware of how hard it is to achieve what he has….Oscar.
Wiggins,farah,murray in that order
Might as well put my hat in the ring. For me it has to be Murray. To overcome what he has is absolutely incredible. I think he’ll go on to be number 1 now!
Andy Murray has achieved so much this year. He has worked so hard to be where he is today. Leaving home at 15 to train abroad and has come under fire for this and that. Things that are unimportant. what’s important is the results that he has produced. Future number one Andy Murray should get the award for 2012! Come on lets get behind our current hope for a Wimbledon champ.
The clue is in the title: Sports PERSONALITY of the year.
This is not sports achievement of the year.
I wouldn’t really say Murray has an attractive personality. He is surly and more often than not wears a scowl.
