10 Greatest World Cup Underdog Stories

8. Ghana (2010)

Ghana's run at the 2010 World Cup run might be best remembered for that fateful quarter final clash with Uruguay in which Luis Suarez was guilty of a handball clearance off the line to deny the Ghanaians a spot in the semi-finals.

In spite of the tragic and somewhat unjust end to their tournament run, the Black Stars were one of 2010's most impressive underdog stories. Drawn in a competitive group alongside Germany, Australia, and Serbia, Ghana earned a great victory in their opening game against Serbia and fought hard for a 1-1 draw against Australia. They lost narrowly to Germany but had still done enough to get through to the knockout round.

Ghana's goalkeeper, Richard Kingson, was particularly impressive in the group stage and knockout game against the United States, which Ghana won 2-1 in extra time after a great goal from one of the stars of the tournament, Asamoah Gyan. In winning that game, Ghana became the third African nation to reach the World Cup quarter finals, echoing Senegal's achievement from 8 years earlier.
