10 High-Profile Spurs Bust-Ups

10. Jan Vertonghen & Fernando Torres

On Saturday September the 28th in 2013, Spurs and Chelsea played out a 1-1 draw at White Hart Lane in a match that was marred by some highly unprofessional behaviour from Chelsea's Fernando Torres. The Spanish striker and Spurs' Belgian defender Jan Vertonghen had been involved in a series of exchanges throughout the match that culminated in Torres being sent off, after Vertonghen's play-acting resulted in him receiving a second yellow card - but that was after the striker should already have been given his marching orders. After a physical battle between the two in the corner of the pitch, Torres raked Vertonghen's face with his fingers, scratching him off the ball - a crime that went unpunished at the time as referee Mike Dean didn't see it. Of course, Torres would get his just desserts with the red card later on, but Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho was not too happy about it, given that he believed Vertonghen shouldn't have been playing after pulling down Aston Villa's Nicklas Helenius' shorts in his previous match.
