10 Most Shocking World Cup Moments Ever

9. The 7-1

The 2014 World Cup will live long in the memory of Brazilian football fans, but for a very painful reason. The football-loving country was thrilled to be hosting the tournament for the first time since 1950 and the team had done well to navigate a difficult group, then overcome Chile and Colombia on their way to a fateful semi-final clash with Germany.

The stage was set for an incredible game, with fans singing and dancing in every corner of the wonderful Estádio Mineirão. Despite the highly impressive record of the German team, most Brazilian fans seemed to believe that destiny was on their side and they already had one hand on the famous trophy. Unfortunately for them, destiny had other plans.

By half-time, the Germans were leading 5-0 and the collective heart of Brazil had not just been broken, but stomped into pieces by a ruthlessly efficient iteration of Die Mannschaft. Brazil looked like a Sunday League team, completely torn to pieces by Germany, who managed to score an incredible four goals in the space of just six minutes. The match ended 7-1 and legend has it that some Brazilians are still crying to this day.
