10 Most Unpredictable Goalkeepers Of All Time

9. Lutz Pfannenstiel

Despite being possibly the most obscure goalkeeper to feature on the list, Lutz Pfannenstiel is undoubtedly the most well-travelled.

Having plied his trade for 25 clubs in 14 different countries on all six FIFA confederations, the former German U17 keeper is now living a comparatively quiet life as a scout at 1899 Hoffenheim. Turning down an offer to join Bayern Munich at age 19, Pfannenstiel instead joined Wimbledon, clearly feeling that the Crazy Gang were more to his taste than the European giants.

In a manner that would characterise his career, Lutz's time in England was brief, going on to spend time in South Africa, Finland, Singapore and his native Germany before the millennium.

His time in Singapore would be marred in controversy as he spent 101 days in prison after being wrongly accused of match-fixing.

His next move, to Dunedin Technical of New Zealand, would see him partake in some of his most infamous antics. The keeper stole a penguin and kept it in his bath for 24 hours, putting himself at risk of another stint in jail.

After returning to England, Lutz's luck appeared to finally run out. While turning out for Bradford Park Avenue, the German collided with Clayton Donaldson and was declared medically dead on the pitch before miraculously recovering.

This didn't dissuade him from continuing his career, however. On the contrary, Pfannenstiel went on to play for a further 9 years before retiring in 2011 and cementing his place on this list.
