It can surely only be a matter of time before something dramatic happens at Newcastle, because the alternative is for something catastrophic to happen in the longer term. The club currently sit winless and woeful in 19th, saved the blushes of bottom place by Burnley's leakier defence, and Alan Pardew has been both publicly backed and publicly condemned by his owner. Fans have turned, even some of the media have - as others criticise the fans for being too excitable - and results continue to suggest that the team just aren't really very good. And even as all of that spirals, some fans and some of the media claim that sacking Pardew is not the right way to go: that he remains the best man (or the only man) for the job, and that everything will be all right in the end. Excuses tumble out in his defence in a manner that Pardew would himself be proud of, but all of them miss the point that reality suggests that the former West Ham and Southampton boss has made himself utterly sackable. So the next time someone comes back with a counter-argument against sacking Pardew, make sure they've got their facts right...
