15 Worst Ever Sunderland Premier League Signings

3. Milton 'Tyson' Nunez

After researching the Nunez case in depth, it's clear that no matter which angle you look at the transfer deal from, it's a joke. The short story: Sunderland signed the wrong player. The slightly elaborated story: In 2000, Peter Reid spent £1.6 million on the Honduran hero. He's like a mythical beast. Some official sources claim he was 5"5', while other official sources state that he stood at just 4"10' tall, officially a dwarf. Nunez ended up playing 88 times for his country, but only lasted 15 minutes in English football, a cameo against Wimbledon. And before long, he was sent back off to South America. Several articles tell three different tales. One says that Sunderland mistakenly signed him instead of his strike partner Adolfo Valencia. Another urban legend claims that two scouting VHS tapes were mixed up. A third theory, and the one with the most weight, states that Sunderland thought he was being signed from Uruguayan top flight side Nacional Montevideo, as opposed to Third Division outfit, Montevideo Uruguay, and were given compensation for misleading details about the player. Whatever the true story, it was £1.6 million well spent, purely for creation of Sunderland's greatest ever cult hero, still talked about more than a decade later.
