5 Main Card Predictions For UFC 179

It's back to PPV with a featherweight title fight between Jose Aldo and Chad Mendes!

It's been a few weeks since the last UFC event, and yet it feels like we've barely had a break - perhaps that's a sign of the over-saturation issue the UFC is experiencing this year. That said, we're back with a key featherweight title bout that has the potential to drastically reshape the division, and set UFC history. At UFC 179, Jose Aldo will defend his featherweight title against Chad Mendes for the second time. Should Mendes win, every single current UFC champion will be American, something that hasn't happened in years - and when it did, there were several fewer weight classes. Also on the card is a key light heavyweight match-up between Phil Davis and Glover Teixeira that will see one man get back in the title hunt, and another drop to the back of the line. Outside of that... well, this is a card that lives and dies by its main event, frankly. Aldo vs. Mendes 2 has been hotly anticipated by the hardcore MMA fanbase, but casual fans may be scratching their heads looking for a reason to order this event, as it lacks serious star power. In fact, without the title fight anchoring it, it comes off as more of UFC Fight Night event, just another Fight Pass or Fox Sports card hosted down in Brazil. Is Aldo enough to convince you to buy the card? There has been a lot of talk about his ability to draw, contrasted against his belief that he's underpaid and requires fair compensation for his talents. He has never lost in the UFC, and beaten a ton of top names - yet doesn't seem to get the respect he should. The UFC appears to be aware of this, and is flying in rising featherweight superstar Conor McGregor to keep things interesting. If Aldo wins, could there be a stare-down in the cage? You'll have to tune in to find out. In the meantime, here are five main card predictions for UFC 179.
