5 Megafights Floyd Mayweather Could Have Made Instead Of Andre Berto

Who else could Floyd have faced for his final bow?

Floyd 'Money' Mayweather recently announced who he will be facing in September for his 49th and more than likely last career fight. Andre 'The Beast' Berto is the chosen one, with a large number of fighters being left disappointed after failing to secure a lucrative shot at the self-proclaimed 'TBE' (The Best Ever).

Critics were quick to point out that Berto has lost three of his last six fights, and there were far more deserving challengers across several divisions that were desperate for a shot at Mayweather. It is possible that Berto was hand-picked as a perhaps easier defence, with Floyd not wanting to risk his unbeaten legacy at such a late stage in his career.

38 year-old Mayweather became the first fighter to make in excess of $100 million in one night during his last outing - a points victory over Manny Pacquiao. He will now be turning his attentions to one last big money showdown, in what will be his 12th successive fight at the MGM Grand.

The question stands though - who else could have Mayweather have shared the ring with for one final box office outing? Who could have really tested Floyd? Who could have made his final fight a real spectacle for the fans? Here's five opponents Floyd Mayweather could have picked instead of Andre Berto.

5. Amir Khan

After publicly pursuing a fight with Mayweather Jr. for months on end, Amir Khan will be incredibly disappointed. Khan has done a great job of rebuilding his career since back to back defeats to Lamont Peterson and  Danny Garcia, and has won his last five fights without ever looking threatened.

The 28 year-old is one of few fighters on the planet with faster hand speed than Floyd Mayweather, and many people believe he would have given the American real problems had the fight been made. In spite of his perceived glass chin, Khan has improved defensively in recent years, and is frighteningly quick with his combinations.

Mayweather Jr. vs. Khan would have been a huge commercial hit, with the latter a huge hit in both the United Kingdom and the United States. Mix Khan and Mayweather's talent and marketability, and you have a fight to threaten all box office records.

Khan will now turn his attentions elsewhere after failing to secure a Vegas showdown, with Manny Pacquiao a possible future opponent.
