We’ve only just started the 2013 Wimbledon Championships, but already it seems like there has been some rather slim pickings and a sense of doom for the home country fans. Whilst Andy Murray is still a red hot favourite for the title, there were few “good news” shocks for the majority of the British contingency, with all seven of the wildcard players being knocked out in the first round, many of them without as much as a whimper.
But those watching both at home and abroad have been kept entertained by the many shocks, spills and thrills that have taken place at SW19 so far in the contest, with a huge number of seeds tumbling in the early rounds meaning that we’re looking likely to have a very unpredictable conclusion to the tournament in a little over a week’s time. Here’s a look at some of the biggest upset moments in the tournament as it stands.
6. Robson Comes Good
Laura Robson is no stranger to putting on a good show at Wimbledon: a feisty display against Maria Sharapova won her some big plaudits two years ago, whilst it was her silver medal in the Mixed Doubles at the London Olympics that saw her make her mark on the courts in 2012. That form has stayed with her throughout the following months, meaning that her ranking heading in to Wimbledon was a very respectable 38. Unfortunately, that left her just short of a seed position and thrust her in to the open end of the draw – and saw her placed up against the number 10 seed, Maria Kirilenko.
Fresh off the best start to a year she’s ever had (with a career best QF spot at the French Open), Kirilenko was also a quarter finalist at Wimbledon last year. It all seemed to be pointing in the wrong direction for Robson, but the British hopeful shone in the match, simply outplaying Kirilenko. The “wayward serve” that has often been cited as Robson’s downfall was no issue as she took apart the Russian seed and won 6-3, 6-4, setting her up for what should be an easier run that could match her wonderful performance at the 2012 US Open.
