BBC Sport reported this morning that Angel Di Maria is "close" to a move to Paris Saint-Germain and that the Argentine midfielder has not joined Manchester United on their pre-season tour. Some supporters will be happy to see the back of their number seven who hasn't yet fumigated his red jersey with the same iconic stench as George Best, Brian Robson, Eric Cantona, David Beckham and Cristiano Ronaldo but I feel they're wrong. The 27-year-old is a wonderfully gifted, non-stop, defender-killer who Louis van Gaal and (the Premier League) would be wise to hang onto for at least another season. This isn't a normal footballer that we are talking about, this is Angel. Di. Maria. Remember him? The same man who was voted man of the match in the 2013/14 Champions League final, who scored 15 goals and 24 assists for Real Madrid and whose £59.7 million transfer to Manchester United made Cristiano Ronaldo very angry. You can't just sell a man who covers ground like he is wearing roller skates? Yes he only scored one goal in his last 28 matches for the Red Devils but van Gaal (who struggled to understand his favoured tactic all season) wrongly chose to exploit his versatility and play him in nine different positions, mostly in a formation that didn't suit him.
