Tottenham have been the best team in the Premier League over the past two seasons, finishing third and second respectively and amassing 10 more points than any other side. But they have nothing to show for it, and doubts will continue to linger over Mauricio Pochettino’s men until they lift a trophy or two.

To compete with the other members of the top six, Spurs need to add much greater depth to their squad. Their first-choice XI is the strongest in the division, but they suffer badly when they are without a key player or two.

They have been relatively quiet this summer with a focus on defensive reinforcements, but it is further forward where they need to strengthen to avoid losing ground on their rivals. Everton midfielder Ross Barkley – five league goals and nine assists last season - would certainly improve their options.

He has been made available by Everton and is entering the final year of his contract, so is within Tottenham’s spending power. A hamstring injury means that he would not be able to make an instant impact, but he could be very important in the second half of the season when the games come thick and fast. Spurs would be better equipped to go all of the way if Pochettino didn’t have to flog Christian Eriksen and Dele Alli, or turn to Moussa Sissoko as an alternative.

Barkley has also been linked to Chelsea so Spurs need to take action quickly, otherwise too much pressure will fall on the shoulders of Eriksen, Alli, and Harry Kane, and they will be short of the depth needed to sustain a challenge.
