“Manchester United were the first to be interested in me, while Newcastle were probably the last. United had a reputation for coaching young players, along with Wolves and Chelsea, but Newcastle weren’t known for that.” - Sir Bobby Charlton, April 2012.

Sir Bobby Charlton has achieved legendary status at Manchester United - no mean feat considering the amount of superstars that have come and gone from the Theatre of Dreams in the last century or so. The midfielder just saw his international goals record overtaken by Wayne Rooney last year, but the nation will probably never see a midfielder of his ilk.

260 goals in 807 career appearances is nothing short of outstanding.

The Newcastle-born star is a Geordie through-and-through. So much so that he was even second cousins of the late Jackie Milburn - Newcastle’s second top scorer of all time. Born into a coal-mining family in Ashington, he was perfectly situated for Newcastle scouts to notice one of the country’s finest talents of all time. But alas, they didn’t. And the rest, as they say, is history.
