Bayer Leverkusen v Atletico Madrid: Champions League Preview

Atletico's bid to go one better than they did last year continues tonight...

Atletico Madrid will be looking to keep their dream of winning the Champions League alive when they travel to Germany to face Bayer Leverkusen tonight. The Spanish Champions were humbled in last season's final by city rivals Real Madrid, as Carlo Ancelotti's men ran riot in extra time to end up winning 4-1. Diego Simeone's men arrive in Germany having lost only one of their last nine Champions League knockout fixtures, and that was last season€™s final. Atletico have been as impressive as ever in this season's group stage as they finished three points clear at the top of group A that also included Juventus, Olympiakos and Malmo. Along with their fantastic form in the Champions League, Madrid have also not conceded in their last 467 minutes of European football, the longest current run in the CL. Leverkusen know what a tough task awaits them at the BayArena. They come into the game in sixth place in the Bundesliga following Saturday€™s 2-2 draw with Augsburg, although they have only won eight of their 22 league matches so far this season. In the group stages, Roger Schmidt€™s team finished one point behind AS Monaco at the top of group C. The one time finalists, in the Zidane final of 2002, have failed to reach the quarter-finals since then and are long odds to end that jinx this season. However, the Germans will take some hope from the side's pervious meetings. They came in the Europa League group stages five seasons ago and both ended in 1-1 draws. Leverkusen's Omer Toprak is suspended following his dismissal in the last group stage match while Robbie Kruse, Tin Jedvaj and Lars Bender are all expected to miss out. Spanish midfielder Koke is still missing for Atletico while midfielder Tiago is a doubt. Antoine Griezmann and Mario Mandzukic are expected to continue their partnership in attack.
